The United Way Seeks Volunteer Teams for Days of Caring
BEND,
OR (Spring 2008) – The United Way of Deschutes County is
seeking volunteer teams from area businesses as well as
individuals to lend a hand during the 12th annual
Days of Caring to be held May 16 & 17.
Days
of Caring, the signature event of the United Way of Deschutes
County, is a county-wide effort matching local businesses and
individuals with non-profit agencies for a day of community
service. Projects are scheduled during three different time
periods—Friday morning, Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
Volunteers can help repair and paint bicycles, build sandboxes
for children, plant flowers and refresh landscaping, erect a
swing set for a child care facility or apply a fresh coat of
paint—to name a few projects scheduled for this year.
“The
collective effort of the Days of Caring participants has a
dramatic and visible impact both on the community and those who
become involved in the projects,” commented Terianne Petzold,
director of campaign and marketing for the United Way. “In
addition to being a team-building experience for employees, it
also provides an opportunity for volunteers to experience the
important work that non-profit agencies do every day throughout
Deschutes County.”
Volunteer
teams are matched according to time and skill preferences and
receive lunch, a t-shirt and a goodie bag in addition to the
heartfelt gratitude voiced by the project coordinators.
“Working
together boosts morale and allows our employees the chance to
learn about the agencies and see campaign dollars at work in the
community,” stated Mike Stanley, of SELCO Community Credit
Union. “We are pleased to provide financial and volunteer
support.” SELCO Community Credit Union will be the title
sponsor for this year’s event.

The United
Way Seeks Projects for Days of Caring
BEND, OR (February 7, 2008) – The
United Way of Deschutes County is seeking project proposals for the
12th annual Days of Caring to be held May 16 & 17.
Days of Caring, the signature event
of the United Way of Deschutes County, is a county-wide effort
matching local businesses with non-profit agencies for a day of
community service.
Days of Caring provides an
opportunity for non-profits to select a project that needs helping
hands, which in turn provides a great chance for community
volunteers to learn more about the agencies and their programs.
Past projects have included landscaping, graffiti removal,
playground installation, dog washing and indoor-outdoor painting.
Projects can be scheduled during three different time options—Friday
morning, Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
“We would like to schedule up to 60
projects in Deschutes County this year,” commented Terianne Petzold,
Director of Campaign and Marketing for the United Way. “And we plan
to involve more than 500 volunteers from local businesses. This is
a great way to have a hands-on experience with our community while
sharing a talent.”
SELCO Community Credit Union will be
the title sponsor for this year’s event. “We are very proud to
support Days of Caring—a project that connects employees,
volunteers, agencies and the people they serve,” stated Mike
Stanley, of SELCO Community Credit Union.

Community matters.
Day of Caring
has been an annual tradition since 1996. United Way of Deschutes
County matches community volunteers with service projects at local
nonprofit agencies. It provides an opportunity
to get involved with your United Way and community agencies that
serve hundreds of individuals and families in our community every
day.
In past years
volunteers have collected food, painted houses, cooked and served
meals to the elderly, installed wheel chair ramps, created a dog
park and provided general assistance for nonprofit organizations
that could use our help.
Many local companies allow their employees to participate in
Day of Caring
as a way of giving back to the community. Employees see it as a
team-building experience and they also come away with a better
understanding of nonprofit agencies and services in our area. And,
United Way donors are given a first-hand opportunity to see how
services supported by the Community Impact Fund aid people in need.
